Bend may be growing and changing, but as someone who grew up here, I am always delighted by the lovely threads that keep us connected.

When I got the invitation to Luci Charlton’s graduation brunch, I gladly accepted. Every year, I have the pleasure of being in the midst of the buzzing energy of young graduates ready to take on Life and its adventures. The work is easy, as they shine through those portraits with all the promise of the future.

It was even more touching to realize that I had attended middle and high school with so many of the parents at the party. Somehow it doesn’t seem that long ago that we were wearing our caps and gowns and wondering where our paths might lead. How wonderful they led back to Bend.

Recently a friend from my Mountain View High School class of ’87 posted a copy of our Senior wills from the Viewpoints newspaper. There it was, my chosen quote from Spock, which I still offer up to graduates today:”The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few or the one.” In so many ways, Bend is still the close connected community I grew up with and care about.
